WeekLEE Chatter: GPS LightLock

We learned about Mike Gookin’s product, the GPS LightLock. The GPS LightLock is the world’s only brand of fully automatic & self-programming astronomical timers. Your lights turn on when the sun goes down when you use this product. Mike invented his product at Florida Gulf Coast University.

“We had a choice of outsourcing, in-sourcing, onshore, offshore, contract manufacturing or in-house manufacturing. At the time we started this project, this community was hurting. I’ve lived in the 33916 zip code since the 1980’s and this is home. We invested here to provide jobs for a struggling community. I am very comfortable in this community and it is my home.”

20 years ago he visited the Southwest Florida Enterprise Center when it was owned by another entity and looked like what he describes it as “a horse barn body shop.” Years later when he was looking to set up shop, a friend mentioned the “old horse barn” and how it had been turned into a brand new incubator. He was surprised the center had been developed in such a short amount of time.

Mike told us the city has been like a big brother to him on his journey. Gookin travels to different areas to share his story as part of STEM programs and also participates in the Junior Achievement of SWFL program.
