In December, EconomicLEE Speaking featured an article about a group of German journalists who traveled to Lee County. The Lee County Economic Development Office (EDO) hosted the journalists to capitalize on the strong appeal Lee County has to the international market.
On Nov. 28, Lee County received its first media story to result from this press trip. Tim Schafer, a freelance correspondent for several German publishers, published an article both online and in print in Borse Online, titled “Florida’s Best Stocks.” Borse Online is a German finance magazine and one of the leading finance websites in Germany.
Lee County received a second media story on Jan. 20. Tim Rahmann, the New York Bureau Chief of WirtschaftsWoche, published an article as the main story on the publication’s website. WirtschaftsWoche is a German weekly business news magazine that receives 200,000 unique visitors annually. The story, titled “German Companies are Discovering Florida,” was placed prominently on the website for two days. In the article, Rahmann talks about how the U.S. still is the most important market for German companies and startups; however, for them to be successful in the U.S. they actually need to be located here. Rahmann goes on to say that finding the right spot sometimes proves to be difficult for Germans, and Lee County is trying to capitalize on that by promoting the region as the perfect place for German companies to relocate. In recent years, German companies such as Klocke and Special Coatings have chosen to do business here because of lower taxes, affordable property and an unparalleled quality of life.
