Lee County Limelight | Alliance for the Arts
Nestled on a ten-acre campus, Alliance for the Arts is the linchpin of the arts and culture industry in Southwest Florida. Our vision is for a vibrant community in which the arts inspire the creative exchange of ideas through an abundance of innovative, relevant and diverse cultural experiences. Our mission is to connect people to the arts and to each other. We work daily with our energetic and dedicated staff, volunteers and members to help transform lives and improve our community through the arts.
Why did you choose Lee County?
Forty years ago, there was no unified arts community or venue where it all came together. Founded in 1975 by community leaders such as David Robinson and Barbara B. Mann, the Alliance for the Arts was created to foster the growth of local arts. The Alliance’s membership includes 50+ area arts and cultural organizations and over 1200 artists and individual members. It supports local organizations by providing theatre, meeting and classroom space in the 12,000 square foot William R. Frizzell Cultural Centre on a 10-acre campus opened in 1992.
What is your Secret to Success?
Passion. We are passionate about our work and the ability of the arts to transform lives and improve our community. We also provide year round entertainment at affordable prices.
Little Known Fact?
The Alliance for the Arts is committed to making theatre accessible for all audiences. Our senses of hearing and sight connect us to people, the arts, music, theatre and our environment. We offer patrons amplified audio devices for every production. For patrons who are blind or have vision loss, the Alliance provides a guided touch tour of the set before performances and a describer who verbalizes what is happening on stage during pauses in the dialogue.
What Differentiates You?
What differentiates us is our commitment to actively pursue opportunities to expand access to the arts in diverse communities; we value the power of collaboration with artists, organizations and our community to promote the arts and to increase equity, access and innovation; and we advocate for the arts to be recognized as an important part of the economy and instrumental in making our community a great place to live, work and play.
